Joanna Cohen is a reader in American history at Queen Mary University of London. She is the author of Luxurious Citizens: The Politics of Consumption in Nineteenth-Century America, and coeditor of Calculating Worth: A History of Value in Nineteenth-Century North America, also published by the University of Chicago Press.
