Robert Schumann
Robert Schumann (1810–1856) was the foremost German composer of the Romantic period and an influential music critic. Schumann was originally intent on becoming a virtuoso pianist, but a hand injury foreclosed that path. He then focused his musical energies on composing. His Advice to Young Musicians was created to accompany his famous 1848 compositions, Album for the Young.
